Where RISE Sleep Clinic Accepts Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield

Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is one of the independent Blue Cross Blue Shield licensees. RISE Sleep Clinic treats Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield members in its licensed territory:

DelawarePennsylvaniaWest Virginia

Note: Coverage depends on your specific Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield plan. We'll verify your benefits during intake.

A sleep specialist in Highmark country means Pittsburgh, or a long drive

Highmark is the Blue Cross licensee for western and central Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Delaware. The American Board of Sleep Medicine lists sixteen behavioral sleep medicine specialists across those three states, but half of them sit in greater Philadelphia — the one corner of the map Highmark does not cover. What is left is spread across some of the most rural country in the eastern United States.

  • Pittsburgh is the bench, and Philadelphia isn't Highmark's: Pennsylvania has thirteen listings, but eight of them are in Philadelphia and its suburbs — southeastern Pennsylvania is Independence Blue Cross territory. Inside Highmark's western and central footprint the count falls to two in Pittsburgh plus single entries in Greensburg, Grove City and Hershey. Erie, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Altoona and Williamsport have none.
  • West Virginia has two, both at the edges: The state's only listings are in Morgantown and Huntington, at the northern and western corners. For 1.8 million residents across some of the most mountainous terrain in the eastern United States, a listing in Morgantown is not meaningfully accessible from Beckley or Martinsburg — the drive is three to four hours through the mountains, in weather.
  • Inside Highmark's own territory the count is eight: Set greater Philadelphia aside and what is left across Highmark's actual footprint is eight certified specialists: two in Pittsburgh, one each in Greensburg, Grove City and Hershey, two in West Virginia and one in Delaware. Eight, for a territory that runs from Erie to Rehoboth Beach.
  • Delaware has exactly one: A single listing, in Newark, for roughly a million residents. That is the entire certified behavioral sleep medicine bench in the state. Members downstate in Sussex County are more than an hour and a half from their own state's only listing, and crossing into Maryland or Pennsylvania to find a second option is a different insurance conversation — one telehealth avoids entirely.

Across Highmark's three states the question is whether you can reach a specialist weekly for two months. Virtual CBT-I answers it the same way in Erie as in Rehoboth Beach. We verify your specific Highmark plan's benefits and expected costs during intake, before you start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield cover RISE Sleep Clinic in my state?
RISE Sleep Clinic treats patients across Delaware, Pennsylvania and West Virginia and accepts Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield throughout that service area. Coverage still depends on your individual plan, so during your assessment we verify your specific Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield benefits and confirm them in writing before treatment starts.
Do I need a referral for CBT-I?
Referral requirements are set by your individual Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield plan rather than by RISE, and they vary. You do not need a referral to start with us — we check your plan's requirements as part of intake and tell you before your first session if one is needed.
What's my copay with Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield?
Your copay is set by your specific Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield plan, and behavioral health cost-sharing differs widely between plan lines — some plans apply a flat copay, others apply the visit to your deductible. We won't quote you a number we haven't checked: we verify your exact per-session cost with Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield during intake and tell you before you commit to treatment.
How many sessions does Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield cover?
A full course of CBT-I is usually 6-10 sessions. Whether your plan covers all of them depends on your Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield behavioral health benefit, which may carry a visit limit or an authorisation requirement. We check your session limits during intake and tell you what your plan allows before you start.
Does Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield cover telehealth for insomnia?
RISE Sleep Clinic is a telehealth practice — every session is virtual, with a licensed sleep psychologist. Telehealth behavioral health coverage is set by your individual Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield plan; we verify how your plan handles virtual visits during intake, along with your cost per session, before treatment begins.
Is virtual CBT-I as effective as in-person?
Yes. Randomised trials of CBT-I delivered by video show outcomes comparable to in-person treatment, which is why it is delivered this way rather than as a compromise. How your own plan reimburses a telehealth session is a separate question, and one we check for you at intake.
What if my Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield plan doesn't cover CBT-I?
If your specific plan doesn't cover CBT-I, we offer self-pay options. We can also provide superbills for out-of-network reimbursement. Many patients find that 6-10 sessions provide lasting improvement worth the investment.
How long does treatment take?
CBT-I typically involves 6-10 sessions over several weeks. Most patients notice significant improvement within 2-4 weeks. The skills you learn continue working long after treatment ends.
Is CBT-I better than sleep medication?
The American College of Physicians recommends CBT-I as the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia. Research shows CBT-I produces longer-lasting results than medication, without side effects or dependency risks.
Do I have to use the RISE app?
The RISE app is recommended but not required. It helps track sleep patterns and provides daily guidance, but you can receive effective CBT-I treatment without it.
What if I need a sleep study?
If your sleep therapist determines a sleep study is needed, they'll refer you to an accredited sleep lab. A sleep study is billed under your medical benefits rather than your behavioral health benefits, and coverage rules differ — your RISE Sleep Clinic clinician will help you coordinate it with your Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield plan.

For the first time, I had a safe place to talk about why I wasn't sleeping and someone who could show me exactly how to fix it. By improving my sleep, positive changes in the rest of my life just started stacking up.
